I have been photographing the male and female body where I tear then restructure the images by re-arranging them and sewing the various parts together with a needle and thread to create life size photographic assemblages. The stitches resemble sutures; where surgery is one means of many that can repair, correct, or alter the body. This tearing, cutting and sewing is an act of analyzing and reflecting on the body as it becomes more grotesque and unnatural the further we alter it in modern medicine and culture.
I am also influenced by hominid fossils and the evolution of man, the black and white images are an examination on the passage of time and the human condition. I scan or photograph x-rays, invert them in photoshop and print them onto transparencies. I then arrange these onto a large piece of black and white photographic paper and expose just like a photogram or even use the printed transparencies in wall hung configurations. The pairing of x-rays with bones of modern man and emulating fossils found in archeology digs accentuates the complexity of how far humans have evolved and where we will evolve to next.
